Because of this, we carry exhaust brakes from the biggest names in the diesel exhaust brake industry. BD Engine Brake, Banks, and PacBrake have long been recognized as the innovators when it comes to light duty exhaust brakes.
All 2003-2007 Powerstrokes equipped with an automatic transmission will require a torque converter lockup for full exhaust brake function. The reason this is required is due to the fact that on these trucks, when the accelerator pedal is released, the torque converter goes into a kind of free spin, similar to depressing the clutch pedal on a manual transmission, thus not transferring 100% of the braking through the drivetrain to the rear tires. This feature comes standard on certain kits specifically intended for automatic transmission equipped trucks, where other manufacturers sell it separately. Further, for those running a stock style VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbo), you have the option of adding an electronic exhaust brake which basically uses the vanes in the turbo to create back pressure. The advantage to this style of brake are they are simple to install and less expensive than a traditional exhaust brake, but the disadvantage is that they typically do not have the retarding force of a traditional exhaust brake.
