The factory fuel system on your 2003-2004 Dodge Ram with a 5.9L Cummins diesel engine consists of your underbed fuel tank, fuel/lift pump, high pressure CP3 injection pump, and electronically controlled injectors (simplistically put). For years, Dodge has had a notorious issue with the lift pumps on our Cummins powered trucks. One of the main issues, is its location.

Until 2005, the pumps were mounted on the drivers side of the block behind the fuel filter. The two main issues with this setup were that it absorbed a lot of heat from the block, and that it required the pump to "pull" fuel, as opposed to "push" fuel as it was originally designed to do. In model year 2005, Dodge began to mount the fuel pump inside of the fuel tank on vehicles leaving the factory. Further, for owners of 2003-2004 models, if you ever went into the dealership after 2005 with a dead or dying lift pump, they would install a retrofit kit that would also install a lift pump into the basket assembly inside of your fuel tank, just as they were coming from the factory. Doing so has helped tremendously with lift pump failure, however, with any type of engine enhancement, they are still EXTREMELY prone to failure (we've still seen numerous pumps fail on stock powered trucks). This is why we recommend one of our high pressure fuel pumps from such companies as FASS or Pureflow. These systems are available both as a stand alone pump, as well as with an integrated fuel filter and water/air separator, which will help to prolong pump and injector life by removing any particulate matter and air to prevent cavitation, which the factory system cannot do.

Besides lift pumps, we also carry an assortment of other fuel related items for your Cummins. For those that have installed chips/programmers on the truck, and aren't seeing the gains you were hoping for, we offer performance injectors from such companies as Dynomite Diesel and Industrial Injection, that will help produce the fueling the engine is trying to push. We also offer performance single and dual CP3 injection pumps for those looking to completely open up the bottlenecks of the factory fuel system!

Note: If you are purchasing an upgraded lift pump system, you will need to verify lift pump location. This can be done simply by turning the ignition on and listening for the sound of the pump. It will either be located directly behind the fuel filter on the drivers side of the block, or inside of the fuel tank. If your pump is inside of the fuel tank, you will need to purchase the optional pickup tube for installation of the pump.
