Proper routine maintenance of your EcoDiesel is critical in ensuring the overall long-term integrity of your entire powertrain. And its not just about keeping up with the recommended service intervals, its also about using the highest of quality fluids and filters. First, lets quickly discuss conventional versus synthetic oil. Conventional oil is refined from crude oil, removing impurities and properties that are not desirable for use in a powertrain, such as your engine. By nature, conventional oils are more prone to degradation when exposed to heat, meaning their lifespan is not as great as most synthetic oils. Conversely, synthetic oils are a man-made product that starts out by only adding the chemicals and components to manufacture the oil, as opposed to removing what is NOT wanted in the oil, such as with conventional oil. Because synthetic oils also feature consistently sized and composed molecules, the flow characteristics are more consistent across a wider temperature range, again, resulting in better performance of the oil. Now, even with the highest quality of oil, unless its being properly filtered, you can still expect a short lifespan and without a doubt, not all filters are created equally. There's a reason the off-brand filters and fluids found at your local superstore are so cheap and just because it "fits" doesn't make it right!

The 2020+ Ram EcoDiesels call for 8.5 quarts (compared to 10.5 in the previous generation engines) of low ash 5W-40 and a minimum API Rating of CJ-4 that meets MS-12991 certifications. Sounds like a mouthful, right? But according to VM Motori, the manufacturer of the engine, that's what it takes to make sure your engine isn't a ticking time bomb!

SERVICE INTERVALS:
  • Engine Oil: as indiated or no more than 10,000 miles or 12 months
  • Fuel Filter Replacement: 30,000 miles or 36 months
  • Transfer Case (4WD Models): 120,000 miles or 12 years under normal use. If 4WD use is often used, 60,000 miles or 6 years
  • Differentials: 20,000 miles or 24 months. The front differential (4WD models) uses 75W-85 and the rear is 75W-140
