Prevent blown head gaskets with the installation of a GRP Coolant Filtration Kit on your 6.4!
Wait, what.....how does filtering the coolant prevent blown head gaskets? Well, that's easy! The coolant in your Powerstroke runs throughout the engine via narrow water jackets. Any type of foreign material that may find its way into the coolant can easily become deposited into these water jackets, and elsewhere, eventually causing a buildup of material. This buildup, or damming effect, will in turn cause higher pressures within those water jackets, eventually leading to blown head gaskets, or worse.
Typically, the most frequent situation that foreign material enters the coolant system on a 6.4L is when there is a failure of an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) cooler. In most situations, when a 6.4L cooler fails, it cracks, causing the soot contained within the cooler to now blend with the coolant, and unless the coolant is flushed after a failure, all of this soot now deposits into the engine, and even a flush cannot get ALL of the soot matter. The only way to prevent against long term build up is by filtering the coolant.
Even without an EGR cooler failure, its actually quite surprising how much debris really lies within your coolant system. Most trucks will go through two or three filters within 3,000 miles to really "cleanse" the system, and after that, only need to worry about it every 15,000 miles or so.
To aid in servicing your coolant filtration kit, this system includes two ball valves that are orientated on each side of the filter base to allow you to shut off the coolant to avoid messy filter changes. Further, this kit includes a generic Fleetguard branded filter that is easy to find from your local auto parts dealer, so no need to worry about having to order in filters.
GRP's product line was originally intended for installation shops and to be purchased in bulk quantity, which in turn means that there are no installation instructions that come with any of their products. We feel that this compromise is easily countered with the exceptional craftsmanship that goes into these kits, as well as the price point. If you are unsure of how to install any of their components, but still want to tackle the job yourself, there are plenty of generic installation videos available online that will allow you to still take advantage of the benefits of purchasing GRP.
