Oil cooler failure is unfortunately very common on the 6.0 Powerstrokes. Furthermore, this failure can lead to obviously high engine oil temperatures which can result in engine damage, EGR cooler failure, as well as other unwanted disasters. While the fix in the past has been to replace the oil cooler, in many instances, this can be avoided by simply back flushing the cooler. This simple to use kit allows you to do just that while leaving the oil cooler on the truck, saving time and money.
As a way to monitor whether your truck is due for an oil cooler flush, the simplest method is to keep an eye on the difference (Delta) between your engine oil temperature and coolant temperature. As the temperature begins to rise on the oil temperature compared to the coolant, its definitely time to flush. Overall, what happens is that casting debris will literally lodge itself into the cooler, causing it to lose its efficiency. This flush kit allows you to back flush, or quite literally push flow the opposite direction, to dislodge this, and any other debris. In most instances, this process will completely restore the effectiveness of your oil cooler, potentially avoiding disaster.
GRP's product line was originally intended for installation shops and to be purchased in bulk quantity, which in turn means that there are no installation instructions that come with any of their products. We feel that this compromise is easily countered with the exceptional craftsmanship that goes into these kits, as well as the price point. If you are unsure of how to install any of their components, but still want to tackle the job yourself, there are plenty of generic installation videos available online that will allow you to still take advantage of the benefits of purchasing GRP.
