Sir: my 04 2500 6.6l LB7 Duramax quit running while driving down the road... I took note that the fuel filter lost prime and tried to prime the filter, it would not remain primed after a restart attempt... I smelt a burn aroma and when opening the hood, a module on left bank of the engine (looking in from grill) had smoke coming from this module... Print on the module had Izuzu written which appeared to be an engine control or engine information module... If I am correctly identifying the module, can you tell me more about the specs and operation as well as reliability and/or failure rates of this device... Also, am I on the right track of analysis for replacement with the above module that would lead to the correction of my problem... thanks for listening... Duncan in SC, 803-624-0142?

Sounds like you are referring to the FICM or Fuel Injection Control Module. They are an issue on those trucks. They will usually go through one in it's lifetime. If you get poor fuel flow through it, it could cause it to overheat. I would replace it and rebuild your filter head. Maybe look at installing a lift pump as well.
