Many would argue that the turbo is the heart of your diesel engine, pumping air through the cylinders and creating combustion when combined with the direct injected, high pressure fuel. As additional horsepower is added to your Powerstroke’s engine through programmers, chips, or performance injectors, the original fuel-air ratio can be altered causing a rich mixture of air to fuel. Further, as age takes its toll on a factory turbocharger, its original efficiency will be degraded, requiring a rebuild or a replacement.

Beginning in 2020 model years, Ford retained the same basic Garrett GT37 turbo that had been used on previous generations, but with some revisions, and coincidentally, it resembles the turbo used exclusively on the 2011-2014 cab and chassis models, mostly in relation to size, characteristic of having a quick spool-up from low boost levels. The redesign consists of a new turbine and compressor wheel to complement the smaller frame, as well as a double axle which allows the wheels to run closer to the housings, improving overall performance as more air is able to be “captured” by the wheels, increasing efficiency. Further, especially useful for those in colder climates, they adopted a fully electronic actuator, compared to previous models that utilized an electro-hydraulic version that was slow to respond in such conditions due to the viscosity of the colder fluid. This new fully electronic version delivers consistent actuator response, no matter the ambient air temperature.

Overall, we at Diesel Power Products see some benefits and some downfalls on the revised GT37. When it comes time to replace your factory turbo with a direct, stock replacement, or a higher flowing aftermarket upgrade, feel free to give us a call or send an e-mail to [email protected] with any questions that you may have.
