Description
When working properly, the 68RFE and Aisin AS69RC are a great transmission. Unfortunately, though, when things go bad, they go very bad. The 68RFE especially has been plagued with a high failure rate that many attribute to the fact the converter in this transmission never goes into a full lockup, which creates excessive heat, and we all know what heat does to a transmission. Interestingly enough, this easy to install bypass valve delete can keep your transmission temperatures in check in certain environments, potentially saving you a heap of money. Another part that can be damaged by the heat allowed to pass through the factory bypass valve is the factory plastic filter coupler. To remedy this, ATS manufactures and includes a billet filter coupler so that the filter has a solid mounting point which won't be compromised by higher temperatores or over-tightening. HOW IT WORKS: Ram decided to incorporate a transmission cooler bypass valve into the cooling system of the 68RFE and Aisin AS69RC that bypasses the transmission cooler during cold operation. The intent is to force the transmission to warm up faster. The reality is this bypass valve leaks and sticks in the bypass position in almost every case, causing the transmission cooler flow to bypass the trans cooler, essentially eliminating the trans cooler from the circuit. This causes severe damage to the transmission over time because it is not being adequately cooled by the transmission cooler. The ATS cooler block replaces the faulty design, eliminating the bypass valve and ensures 100% of the trans cooler flow is forced through the trans cooler. In every case this substantially reduces transmission temperatures. IMPORTANT FITMENT NOTES: This product will only work on 68RFE and Aisin AS69RC transmissions. The AS69RC is found on cab and chassis models, which is different than the ASC69RC, found on the later model High Output Rams. If you are uncertain as to which transmission you have, please reference your build sheet. Replaces part numbers 68186711AA, 68186711AB

About ATS Diesel Performance
ATS DIESEL PERFORMANCE

ATS Diesel Performance, based out of Arvada, Colorado, is a diesel performance manufacturing company that designs, engineers, and manufactures upgraded transmission components, valve bodies, patented heavy-duty torque converters, exhaust and intake manifolds, electronics, turbochargers, dual CP3 injection pumps, and more for Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax powered diesel trucks. Operating out of a humongous 110,000 square foot facility in the heart of the Rocky Mountains allows ATS to keep operations in-house, as opposed to overseas sourcing, and then grueling test their products at altitude and through grades and descents that would make other companies think twice. From full-time RV users who travel nonstop to high-horsepower competition-based vehicles, ATS has the answers.

ATS DIESEL TRANSMISSIONS

Clint Cannon and Ranee Elder founded Automotive Transmission Specialists in 1993. At that time, the company specialized in transmission repair for all types of vehicles. In 1997, the company "Performance Torque Converters" was founded, and they started doing torque converter rebuilds in-house. Bringing the capability of building torque converters in-house gave them more flexibility to service their racing customers. As the popularity of diesel trucks grew and more people became aware of the power upgrades available for their diesels, problems with diesel transmissions emerged.

Clint started research and development into a more robust torque converter to address the transmission issues. It was discovered that a clutch pack design was the answer to providing a robust torque converter. The development of the TripleLok Torque Converter and the company's focus on Diesel Performance products resulted in a rename of the company to ATS Diesel Performance.

By having their foot in the door before most, it allowed ATS Diesels transmission upgrades to grow with the demands of diesel trucks, putting them at the forefront of reliability. Fortunately for us, Clint didn't stop with transmissions and began to explore and refine upgraded turbochargers, intake and exhaust manifolds, and anything else to generate additional power with the ever-present mindset of maintaining powertrain reliability.

ATS Diesel products are proudly made in the USA.

Quick upgrade!

"Did this at the same time as a pan upgrade. Can get messy quick if you don’t plan it out! Lay a tarp down, easy install."

So far so good

"Installed very easily, drained torque converter while disconnected. Temps dropped around 30 degrees after install. Only issue is pulled a 30’ RV and temps got up to 240 crossing a mountain. Wasn’t at this temp for very long but was worried temps were too high. Fluid level is good and only around 81k on the transmission. Overall excellent product."

Michael W. (4/5)

Before installation transmission stayed around

"Before installation transmission stayed around 164. After installation highest I have seen is 145."

David S. (5/5)

ATS Thermal Bypass

"Excellent machining, fit and finish. Installation was a breeze. Works as it should!"

Brad T. (5/5)

ATS Thermal Bypass!

"I chose ATS due to their extensive knowledge of the 68RFE over similar product manufacturers. The machining was flawless like a piece of jewelry no one will ever see. I heeded the warning and used a crows foot and torque wrench to install the fittings and lines. After a couple thousand miles no leaks what so ever. Great product great company! Thank you DPP!"

"Way cooler trans temperatures"

Darrin M. (5/5)

Truck transmission is running cooler

"Truck transmission is running cooler overall. The transmission has a lot of miles on it 190,000 . So when it gets heat soaked, it’s a little hard to get the temperature down. When it’s 69° outside, it runs at about 125° but during the day when it’s well over 100 the transmission runs at about 170 or higher. . the highest that I’ve seen it is 184° going uphill Mountain Roads in stop and go trafficbut once it got up and going on the freeway, it cooled down fast . the temperature hung out at about 164°. ."

Josh B. (5/5)

Just towed my rv 400+

"Just towed my rv 400+ miles for the first time after installing this thermal bypass valve, temperature never exceeded 175* Fahrenheit. Worth every penny!"

Nelson C. (5/5)

Not proper offset

"This product says it would fit on my truck . I checked it twice . When installing it I noticed and offset on one side of the original part . When matching up the original to the purchased part the left side was about 1/4 inch shorter than the right . I returned it and bought another part from a different vendor and it had the proper offset and worked"

ROBERT (1/5)

It works

"Install was simple. My transmission temp went from about 200-210ish range to 140-160 range when towing my travel trailer with air temp in the 70s&80s."

Q&A

Hello i have a 13 ram 3500 i bought this and at first i was getting temps between 110-130. now recently i’m getting 180-190 at idle and driving around 150-170. i have the aisin transmission, any reason why this would happen? fluid looks to be at the correct level.
The bypass by itself just get's rid of the factory thermostat that aids in transmission warm up but does not offer any cooling capability. There are a few different scenario's that could cause the variation in temperatures. Nothing seems out of the norm with your temps, While sitting stagnant there is no airflow across your transmission cooler (idling) causing the higher temps vs while driving around allowing airflow to cool your transmission fluid. Give us a call if you have any further concerns. -Mark
hello gentlemen Does this product fit on power wagon 2018 transmission ?
This product will not fit your application as it is meant to fit on a 68RFE or AS69RC. You can look over your vehicle build list to verify which transmission you have. DPPCory
Does this come with the quick connect fittings and everything that are needed?

I have a 2013 Cummins with the 68rfe would this thermal bypass valve delete be a good idea to add if my truck is fully deleted and has hpp 5 stage efi and rev max trans tuning or would trans tuning alone be enough, I dont want to go overkill, also would the valve body plate be a good idea as well if I have trans tuning I see there's alot of pressure modules an things like that to benefit the trans just want to know what's best considering I already am deleted and tuned and also have trans tuning thanks.
Yes that bypass valve delete is a great idea, excellent upgrade for longevity of the transmission. I would definitely look at a gasket and plate kit also. When we up the line pressure on the 68's it can cause some internal cross leakage. That would cut that leakage down to almost nothing. And prevent the clutches from dragging. Thank you! DppSands
