While the 3.0L EcoDiesel may be considered the little brother of its Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax counterparts, the fuel system is anything but. In its entirety, it takes many cues from some of these higher horsepower alternatives that together creates an extremely efficient system.
Once diesel leaves the fuel tank, it passes through a low pressure lift pump that produces 8-10 psi on average. This lightly pressurized fuel is then transferred to the high pressure CP4 injection pump. In the past, more capable CP3 injection pumps have been utilized by all of the Big Three, but Ford and GM adopted the usage of CP4's in 2011 when the change was made to piezo electric injectors, similar to the injectors utilized in the EcoDiesel. Overall, piezo electric injectors are a more efficient injector compared to their traditional common rail injector predecessors, thus do not necessarily require as robust of an injection pump to feed them, at least on stock applications. While the general terminology of the fuel system may be similar to other applications, we have found that their actual capabilities are widely different. For instance, the CP4 found on an EcoDiesel by no means has the output capability of one found on a Powerstroke or Duramax, it just works in a similar fashion, but on a smaller scale.
