The 2020 Duramax L5P is rated at 445 horsepower and 910 foot pounds of torque. Due in large part to the new 10 speed Allison transmission, the maximum tow rating increased substantially compared to the previous generation L5P's, but without any actual increase to the engine's output.

Fortunately, there are numerous methods for extracting a little, or a lot, of additional horsepower and torque out of the L5P, and some quite honestly are simpler than others, and hands down, the quickest method to add reliable power is with the addition of an aftermarket performance programmer. There are numerous options on the market for tuners, some that are a simple "hand held" programmer that plugs into the OBDII under the dash, and then is removed once the programming is complete. Others still plug into the OBDII, but remain installed to act as an interface to allow for various functions, such as gauge display. And finally, others install into the engine bay in-line with various sensors to alter their signal for a power boost.
