Hauling big loads uphill is the easy part, coming down--now that's the hard part. Banks Power has your back with their innovative Banks Brake. This exhaust brake takes the effort out of a down hill grade cutting your speed up to 49% without the use of your wheel brakes.

Banks Brake was designed and tested to take the guess work out of hard braking situations. Unlike other exhaust brakes, Banks created a brake that maximizes the restriction and flow of your exhaust to produce an unequaled amount of stopping power. Achieved by a much larger housing and an intelligently designed butterfly valve, you'll quickly notice a difference in stopping power with your Cummins.

The computerized brake control automatically senses throttle position, controls brake engagement, and provides smooth operation. With the addition of automated brake disengagement at low speeds, you'll notice a smoothing of stop-and-go driving, improvements in mileage and less turbo lag.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • Please note automatic transmissions will require the SmartLock Trans Brake.
  • Banks Brake is not available for stock exhaust with Cat Converter.
  • Banks Brake cannot be installed on vehicles with Banks Ram-Air intake systems.

The exhaust brake by itself is so so. Only after adding the Smart Lock for the transmission was I willing to rate it as OK. I don't like how the Smart Lock kicks out around 1100 rpms. Also, I have a cold air intake and this item when installed hits the housing of the air box. It required me to relocate the air box slightly but I was still not able to get it to quit rubbing. I do notice some difference going down hill while towing, but I personally don't believe it reduces my road speed by 49% as claimed. With that much reduction, one would expect it to bring an unladen vehicle to a near stop, quickly, on flat ground....it does not. If a Jacobs engine brake were available for this engine model, that is how I would have went. Unfortunately, I am stuck with an exhaust brake. I drive a commercial vehicle professionally so I have some experience with exhaust and engine brakes. Because of that, my expectations for this was high. I was let down to say the least (especially considering the very high price) One more thing. The listing says the Smart Lock is required for automatics. Seeing how the vendor sent me the wrong Smart Lock with the brake I installed the brake itself without the Smart Lock. It worked and the instructions never said a word about requiring the use of the Smart Lock. It is an add on to enhance the effectiveness of the Banks Brake. It should be worded as highly recommended, not as required. Very misleading! After installing the Smart Lock, I was a bit more receptive of the product, but if I had it to do over, I would have upgraded to rear disc brakes and been done with it. The Smart Lock is the only thing that prevented me from returning the whole thing.

We appreciate the response and absolutely agree that having a legitimate engine brake available for these trucks would be the ultimate solve all. We note that the SmartLock is required because keeping the torque converter in lock up is a necessity for the braking effect to actually reach the tires and not get lost in the transmission.

I have a 99 ram 2500 4x4 with a 4 inch banks ss exhaust. I have the stock hx 35 turbo currently, but am planning to put a new turbo on at the same time as the exhaust brake. The new turbo needs a 4 inch hx40 down pipe. Do you have the down pipe that will fit instead of the one that comes with the kit??

No we don't unfortunately not with that kit. You would need to get a HX40 Downpipe that fits your application as well.
