The 3rd Generation EcoDiesel engine was released in 2020 model years after Ram essentially took a year off of production for the 2019 model years, unless you count the “Classic” 2019’s that were essentially carryovers from 2018. Now, many would question the wording of a 3rd Gen since there was only one other variation, the 2014-2018 model years….right? Actually even the 2014-2018’s are considered the 2nd Generation because overseas markets got the chance to experience the EcoDiesel engine in its prime before VM Motori brought the engine to the North American market.

Now that we’ve gotten the particulars out of the way, what separates the engine of a 3rd Gen EcoDiesel to that of its predecessor, the 2nd Gen? First and foremost, upon its release, it was the most powerful half-ton pickup boasting 480 foot pounds of torque that nets a maximum towing capacity of 12,560 pounds! In order to achieve this kind of torque compounded with the factory rated 260 horsepower, the engine features revised cylinder heat ports that outflow the previous versions as well as a lower compression ratio (16.5:1 to 16.0:1). Further, redesigned lightweight aluminum alloy pistons were employed. Lastly, to reduce the amount of turbocharger energy loss, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system now features what is known as a “dual loop” system that draws exhaust gases post-DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and recirculates it back into the EGR system.

In terms of what is carried over from the previous models, its still the tried and true chain driven DOHC V6 with four valves per cylinder and CGI (Compacted Graphite Iron) block with a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods. Heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads sit on top of everything and keep all of those combustion pressures inside of the six cylinders.

The question still stands for many: Is the EcoDiesel a good engine? Sure it is! Can it be improved upon? Absolutely!
