The introduction of the Duramax into a GM truck shocked the diesel market, to say the least. Finally, GM had a truck to compete with the likes of the Powerstrokes and Cummins powerplants. As evolution took place, individuals and manufacturers began to tweak and stroke the Duramax engine, delivering more fuel to increase torque. Unfortunately, doing so caused the factory IHI turbo needing upgraded/replaced in order to supply ample air to correct the air to fuel ratio. Most found that the best way to upgrade this turbo was to replace it with a completely different turbo manufacturer, most choosing Garrett or BorgWarner, and upgrading the internals.
